Biography
Sujata Kumari Bhatia graduated from the University of Delaware in 1999 with degrees in biology, biochemistry, and chemical engineering. She also has a master’s degree in chemical engineering, and attended the University of Pennsylvania for her doctorate, graduating in 2003. Bhatia has done research on the development of bio adhesives for wound closure, the development of polymers for interventional medical devices, and the mechanisms of immune cell and cancer cell migration. She has “published five articles, presented six conference papers and made ten presentations to major organizations, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a National Academy of Sciences roundtable.”
Bhatia’s dissertation was selected for the 2002 Young Investigator Award by the Lymphatic Research Foundation, and at age 27 she participated in the Frontiers of Engineering Symposium, “an honor given by the National Academy of Engineering to the nation’s top engineers ages 30-45.”
She worked at the DuPont Company post-graduation and helped to coordinate their United Way Campaign and raised money for the American Heart Association in 2004 and 2005. She also volunteers at Read Aloud Delaware and helped to mentor science and engineering students at the University of Delaware and the Charter School of Wilmington.
At Harvard University, Bhatia is the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies in Biomedical Engineering, Academic Advisor for Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering Undergraduates, and the Assistant Dean of the Harvard Summer School. Bhatia has also taught classes at the University of Delaware and was honored with a Presidential Citation in 2006.
