Biography
Sally Johnson Knox was a tireless advocate for pay equity, reproductive health, and women in elected or appointed offices. Aside from her advocacy work, Knox also owned a design consultant firm in Centerville and Books, Inc. in Greenville.
Knox was appointed to the Pay Equity Committee of the Agenda for Delaware Women. In that role she advocated that women be paid equally for the same work as men. From 1979 – 1989 she served on the Wilmington Women in Business organization, and in 1980 she was appointed by Governor Michael N. Castle to the Delaware Commission for Women. As a member of the commission, she compiled the Talent Bank, a digital database of Delaware Women interested in serving on appointed boards and commissions. She resigned from the commission in 1993.
Knox also helped to fund the Fund for Women, a group that raises and allocates money to support individual and group activities for women and girls. In her obituary, a friend said, “for more than 20 years she was an advocate, mentor, businesswoman, gubernatorial appointee, fund-raiser, and most important, friend to many women. It has been said that ‘women will be forever indebted to the hard work and dedication Sally put forth on their behalf.’
