Biography
Imogene F. Chandler was the second eldest of six children born to Henry Foxx and Annie Mae Truesdale in 1934. Raised in Mount Holly, North Carolina, Chandler moved with her husband, Lucian L. Chandler, and their three children to Wilmington. Chandler was a staunch supporter of early childhood education programs and spent 56 years in the field.
She worked for the Kingswood Community Center in Northeast Wilmington as a daycare teacher for 34 years, “often teaching several generations of a family.” She was later promoted to daycare director, working in the position for nine years. In 1997, she accepted a position at Community Day Nursery in New Castle. Chandler service was a “labor of love,” and she had a strong commitment to “preparing children for a bright and productive future.”
Chandler was an active member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She served on the Usher Board for 25 years, volunteered at their Vacation Bible School, and assisted the church with fundraising campaigns. She adored her family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great children.
