Project Statement: Kendle and Sarah both work with designs and ideas that are a little …different from normal. Collaborating on a piece for this show seemed like a natural fit. The resulting work is extremely unique.
Kendle primarily works in ceramics, alternating between wheel throwing and slip casting. For this piece; several baby heads and appendages were slip cast, then assembled. There was a lot of maniacal giggling. After slow drying, then a bisque firing, the piece was glazed with a black liner glaze on the inside in order to assure that this is indeed a functional vase. The work was then passed to Sarah.
Sarah’s main medium of choice are acrylic paints, sharpies and oil pens. With a few coats of a base, she layered shapes, lines and color by painting, then drawing over with sharpie to clean up lines. Painting on a 3-dimensional surface can be tricky to get smooth clean lines, so that took some practice.
After the piece was finished, Sarah coated it with an acrylic spray varnish to help seal in the paint and prevent water damage. *The work is glazed on the inside, so it is fine to use as a vase (dried flowers are recommended, but if filled carefully it will hold water). The outside cannot be washed, but can be wiped carefully with a damp cloth.
