March I is one of a series of mixed media works on paper made during this time period. Based on the landscape and seascape of Nantucket Island, the work is made up of layers of watercolor, gesso, colored pencils and other drawing media. Color is poured and layered, allowed to pool and drip in an attitude of exploration and play. The works of this type are characterized by improvisation and energetic mark-making.
