I live in San Francisco, with an undulating line of dunes between me and the beach. I love these dunes for how they shift, catch the light, and feel like a portal between the city and the ocean. I love watching the sunlight travel over them during the day, especially the warm glow at sunset.
These are monoprints (unique prints each made from the same etching copperplate, but inked differently each time). I use the same copperplate used to make The Fireberg (2025) but apply ink to small areas of the plate (rather than the entire plate) and run the plate and print through the press multiple times, using a different part of the plate each time, to fragment and abstract the imagery. I also use torn newsprint stencils to block areas of ink from transferring from plate to paper so that I can achieve a variety of shapes and tonalities within a few simple ink colors.
