May Babcock
A papermaking artist using abundant natural materials foraged in New England, giving voice to waterways and their surrounding lands.
MessageI gather seaweed along beaches and shorelines, and embed them into pulp during the wet hand papermaking process. This Seaweed Papers series started as an identification method while exploring invasive and indicator aquatic plant and algae species in Rhode Island waterways. Gilded metal leaf lettering indicates a mix of common and Indigenous place names of where I collected the seaweed.
This site specific and research based project touches on vital issues surrounding ecologies in the Narragansett Bay watershed, tying together our aquatic environments with the ongoing relationships between people and place.
