La Cruz Mandala
Wood and acrylic paint
Circle mandala. Center of mandala defined by a diamond carved out. Orange, cross-like shape surrounding the diamond, connecting to the circular orange border. Orange border followed by a blue border, a wood border, and finally a pink border. Triangular shapes painted yellow with wood borders to define the cross arms. Octagon shapes created by making cutouts in between the yellow triangles. Purple border following the the octagon shape.
The Recycling the Sacred collection is composed of mandalas whose materials were primarily sourced from second hand stores. The artist began collecting variations of wood from second hand stores to later repurpose and give them "a new dignity and life." Many of the patterns used are inspired by ancient native cultures, particularly the basket and pottery designs of the Huhugam. Most of the mandalas take a circle shape, celebrating the Sacred Circle symbol and our place in it.
