In Mexican culture, we celebrate death as much as we celebrate life by honoring our descendants and family members who have gone before us. The skull image (or "calaca" as we call it) is a central figure in the art for Dia de los Muertos. In graffiti culture, when your cap (spray nozzle) gets clogged we call it "dead" or a "dead cap". In this painting I'm honoring our culture and the dead caps that have allowed me to hone my craft.
This piece was created for "El Velorio" a yearly Dia de los Muertos exhibition in Lincoln Heights' Plaza de la Raza in Northeast Los Angeles.
