Sylvia is an intensive care nurse at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. She sent me two photos, which I have combined, to show the hot and sweaty mask she’s been wearing on the night shift and the marks it leaves on her face. I wanted to keep the palette as close to red, white and blue as possible for this painting. I also thought it was important to have the clock to signify Sylvia’s night shifts and as a reminder of the journalists' constant ‘Are we nearly there yet?’ questions.
