Paula is a GP mum of 2 working in the Community Covid clinic in Norwich. She says, ‘What I miss the most is the personal connection from face to face consultations.’
Earlier in the year she told me,
‘I thought I would send you a recent picture of what working as a GP looks like these days ( the image on the left of the painting)
Much in the press about our colleagues in hospital, but general practice has been completely overhauled, and "green" sites versus "yellow" or "hot" sites these days.
More recently she said, ‘So we now have more localised assessments, all happening in the surgery as 'hot hubs' no longer active, but seeing possible covid patients face to face dressed like that. And the possible covid cases are certainly coming back like a wave.
Now we are seeing lots of face to face people only gearing up like that if they present with covid symptoms and are unwell so need to be seen. Otherwise it is a plastic apron, surgical mask and scrubs.’
I chose the colour palette to reflect a GP surgery & had to paint Paula in both her work uniforms. It was a challenge to blend the two photographs into one painting but I’m pleased with how it’s worked out. Her arm, bare & vulnerable, deliberately links the two scenes.
