Ever wonder what sunrise feels like when you’re standing in the Davis Mountains, coffee in hand, quietly watching sunlight split open the sky as the world below stretches and yawns? That’s the moment I set out to capture in this original oil triptych. Each panel is a window onto a different breath of morning—soft clouds drifting above dark trees, light tiptoeing across the hills and waking rocks in the hush before the day’s first birdsong, and everything coming together in the central sunburst that opens the day.
I know these mountains like old friends. After decades of living in Far West Texas, I can tell you which ridge catches the first blush of sun and which valley holds onto the last bit of night. I painted this piece from a few photo references, but mostly from memory and observation, a blend of what I’ve seen and what I still feel every time dawn rolls over the high desert.
Oil paint lets me build up color and texture to share the subtle glow that makes sunrise so magical at high altitude. The triptych format—three panels, each 6" x 8" (framed to 7" x 9")—lets the morning's story unfold slowly, just like the day itself. Hang them together for a panoramic sweep, or let each panel stand alone as a quiet moment of reflection.
If you’re looking for a sense of solitary calm to bring into your home, perhaps a daily reminder that every day starts with quiet possibility that builds to a crescendo, this sunrise is for you. And if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to watch the sky wake up over the Davis Mountains—well, now you don’t have to wonder. I'm so pleased to share the view.
