In this piece, I collaged together linens, lace, buttons, and other hand-me-downs. The basis of the piece is a handkerchief that belonged to my great-great-grandfather. You can see his name, Samuel Charles Clark, written in the upper left of the handkerchief, which features a red ribbon motif. The scraps of writing are copies of letters he wrote to his wife while serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The embroidered salutation, "Yours Afft, Sam" was his usual way of signing those letters.
