Muted colors of mauve, pink, purple, green with blocks of black areas gives this work a subtle quiet mood. The stylized figure framed in black seems to be balanced against the vase of flowers on the opposite side. The mood is reminiscent of Matisse’s interior paintings with female figures in languid poses. If one used a reductionist technique to examine the structure of this composition further; it would be composed of an arrangement of blocks of color like a Mondrian composition. The nude is composed of delicate lines provided by the artist’s technique of applying strips of canvas like cut-outs to the ground. The results show Lofton’s mastery of space, form, line and color.
