Lofton was fond of jazz music, and many of his paintings contained musicians representing their musical genres. In this painting, the figure has become so abstracted that it almost dissolves into the background of pseudo geometric forms. Lofton juggles shapes like a crossword puzzle, leaving the viewer to fill in the blanks or restore the parts. Colors of reds and greens, complements that vibrate with subtle blues, create a mood that reflects the instrument musical rhythm, which settles diagonally across the work.
