The nymph Daphne, was the daughter of the river god Peneus. And she was the first love of the sun god Apollo. The sun god persecuted the reluctant young woman and, since she had no more strength to escape, she begged her father to save her. In response, Peneus used metamorphosis to turn Daphne into a laurel tree. Apollo used his powers of eternal youth and immortality to keep Daphne’s laurel leaves evergreen.
