The three burlesque figures set up a vertical rhythm across the canvas. The vibrant reds, saturated blues, purple and green hues creating repetitive patterns of hair, corset, bikini and hose break up the composition in color and form. Sometimes Lofton’s work is reminiscent of commercial art which was a favorite of pop artists of the sixties who used hard-edged representational forms of advertising and the intense color palette. Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns and others created this movement in this country. Lofton, always the academic scholar of painting, also might be channeling Toulouse Lautrec in these dancers, pop art being an direct descendant of his style.

This work includes frame and certificate of authenticity.
