Whichever of us is awake first will usually let the other sleep. Unless we need the light. Unless we know that the other one needs to wake up. Sometimes we can sleep through the light. Sometimes we just need those five more minutes. And then another five more minutes after that. It’s amazing how many times we hit snooze between the two of us and our two alarms. On this particular day I was the first awake, but he needed to get up and I needed the light. Something about how the light from the lamp that morning reflected off his skin made me stop and look for a bit. There was a beautiful contrast between the warmth of his skin and the cool darkness in the rest of the room. He looked so warm and comfortable. He wanted five more minutes. I wanted five more minutes.
