One of three Jersey Devil paintings. "The Jersey Devil" is a cryptid created in the Pine Barrens in the 1700s. From what I've been able to gather, none other than Benjamin Franklin himself was among the first to spread the tale. Rival pamphleteers named "Leeds" were cutting in on his Poor Richard's Almanac and he was not reticent to tar them with the 'devil worship' brush. Later on, the folklore became that Mother Leeds [who had had 12 children previously] was in childbirth with her 13th and said something about 'make this one a devil' or similar, and out popped the Jersey Devil. There are tantalizing tales of sightings that continue to this day. These paintings are about that lurking mystery, generally, and the Pine Barrens forests, which are lovely, more specifically.
