There are several layers of meaning in this painting. This is one of those paintings that just seemed to gain content and meaning as I worked. Here are a few of my thoughts.
The first is the process of life. We are born, we begin life, we travel our path, write our own story (represented by the wallpaper patters in the background of each figure), grow old and then watch as a new little life begins a new story, thus the title Beginning Again.
There is also the theme of God’s creations (seen through the windows) contrasted with mankind’s creations (the inside scene of walls, floors and the story of our life in wallpaper patterns). They overlap when the sunshine filters through the window between the figures. Of course, the man and the little girl are also creations of God.
Lastly, there is the theme of sacrifice. Sometimes we are so busy with the little things in life (baby toys) that we fail to look around and notice those who have sacrificed and given us the world we live in.
