Constructed from safety reflective fabric, the work appears at first as a plain black rectangle. Yet when activated by a camera flash, an American flag is revealed in glowing, hyper-saturated color. As the artist describes it, the image comes alive “almost like a peacock.” By using a material associated with protection and visibility, the work complicates the idea of safety, connecting the flash of photography to America’s desire for spectacle and recognition, while also recalling the flash of military force behind its unstable global presence.
