Looking Through by Holly Ann Friesen, Image 1.
I grew up on a grain farm in the Red River Valley, with its vast skies and large expansive fields. I spent a lot of my early years looking toward the distant horizon and dreaming. This place created a sense of potential like no other for me. I carried this with me to northwestern Ontario where I became a full-time artist. I would not have my visual language without the natural world and my experiences here. How my work is seen by others will be an amalgam of their experiences, memories and associations. This is how we can communicate further as a community, in this place that links so many people from different backgrounds and histories. “I’m a dry-land-for-hundreds-of-miles person, but I’ve gotten mixed up with people who live on lakes. And then these islands have begun to haunt me…” - Louise Erdrich
