The Impact of Cochlear Implantation on Dementia

Cochlear implants not only improve hearing, but have also been shown to improve cognitive function in older adults. When adults with dementia hear familiar music, it activates many areas of the brain, including the pre-motor and frontal cortex, areas known to be responsible for attention and cognition. Based on that understanding, it is hypothesized that cochlear implants may also stimulate brain networks outside of the auditory cortex alone.
