The name Chalchiuhtlicue means "she of the jade skirt" in Nahuatl, the language spoken by the Aztecs. The water goddess is the wife of Tlaloc, the rain god worshipped throughout Mesoamerica. She is a fertility goddess related to Chicomecoatl, the Aztec corn goddess, who wears a similar headdress but holds corn in her hands.
