Abelam Mami (Yam Mask), 20th century, Sepik River, Papua New Guniea. Yams are the main crop of the Abelam people. Only initiated men may grow them. These masks are placed on yams during fertility rituals in order to invoke the help of female ancestor spirits who are said to briefly inhabit each yam. (FLG)
