An example of the Birdman (tangata manu) petroglyph from Easter Island . The emblem is of a crouching man with a bird head and represents an important ceremony. The cult most likely began in the 16th century. In the 18th century, a cult festival involved a competition in which the contestants vied to retrieve the first egg of the season.
