“WORKERS OF THE SOIL”, c.1932 SIGNED ORIGINAL LIMITED EDITION ETCHING BY AMERICAN ARTIST AND PRINTMAKER JOHN EDWARD COSTIGAN (1888-1972)
This limited edition etching, a realistic scene of a family of farmers at the time of the Great Depression, is signed in pencil by the artist in the margin below the image lower right: J.E. Costigan N.A., and titled in pencil in the margin below the image lower left: Workers of the Soil. Created by the artist circa 1932, published in 1947 by the Associated American Artists in New York.
John E. Costigan, one of America’s foremost printmakers, is well known for his scenes of rural American farmsteads. This etching is an excellent example of the artist’s graphic work. The image size measures 8 1/4 x 12 7/8 inches, printed on cream color wove paper, the sheet with full margins measures 11 7/8 x 15 7/8 inches. The etching comes unframed.
