“LILIES”, 1934 SIGNED ORIGINAL AQUATINT ETCHING BY THE FRENCH ART DECO PAINTER AND PRINTMAKER LOUIS ICART (1888-1950)

This limited edition aquatint etching with drypoint and touches of hand watercoloring, depicting an ethereal woman in a flowing gown clutching white lilies, was created and published by the artist Louis Icart, one of France top Art Deco artist’s known for watercolors and etchings featuring sensual glamorous women in luxurious settings.

The etching is signed in pencil by the artist below the image lower right: Louis Icart. The etching bears the artist’s embossed windmill blind stamp below the image lower left corner, and is dated within the plate mark above the image upper left corner: © Copyright 1934 by L. Icart. N.Y. Catalogue reference: Holland/Catania/Isen, 468.

The etching is printed on cream color wove paper which is fully adhered to a heavy card stock backing. The artist applied a coat of varnish to the image after printing. “Because of the subtleties in the work, the artist felt that a coat of gloss varnish would highlight the background areas” (as referenced in “ICART” by S. Michael Schnessel, on page 57).

The etching image size measures 27 7/8 x 18 7/8 inches. The plate mark measures 28 5/8 x 19 1/2 inches. The full sheet with margins measures 32 x 23 inches. The etching comes unframed.
