Muchacha Calavera Aug 20, 2014
Martha A. Rodriguez: "I know I have changed the background on this muchacha too many times. She was looking a bit too scary which wasn't what I wanted. I wanted cute! This I think is the final. "

"Thanks Prima and amigas! I feel so much better about the Muchacha now.

You know, I used to have a pink tricycle when I was a kid and was a total speed racer on it. I used to turn corners on two wheels!! One time I turned over and got stuck underneath. A neighborhood boy came out to unwind me out of it. He heard me from his house because I was crying so loud! I was fine just embarrassed.

I have a photo of me on that tricycle that my Dad took. I'm on the sidewalk in front of my house looking all happy and proud to be on my trike. This calavera is based on that photo."

Martha A. Rodriguez (1954-2016) did not start painting on canvas until she was almost 50 years old and had just a dozen years to focus on this medium before her death. In this collection you will find a window into the process of how she developed her ideas and prepared them for the canvas.

The Women is a collection of female imagery from Martha's imagination and dreams from the years 2004 through 2016. The faces, dresses, hair and jewels have a breathtaking diversity, but their style is unmistakably and uniquely Martha. We present them as a tribute and celebration of the feminine inspiration that was always at the heart of her work
