The striking beauty of Japanese fashion and design has been a source of inspiration since I was a child. When my Uncle traveled to Japan as a Greek merchant marine, he would return with dolls for my Mom and she amassed a gorgeous collection. The beauty of the dolls captivated me from an early age and they have regularly starred as subjects within my art practice. It is not surprising that over twenty years ago, when I decided I wanted to pursue collage as a mainstay of artistic expression, this is one of the very first images I created. Rendered contemplatively, it is my interpretation of a doll I inherited from my Mom. What’s more, it is part of the inaugural series of collages that set the stage for my present figurative work. This image is a nod to my initial desire to become a collage artist, the global influences that shape my work and the milestones that have led me to this point.
