Gilt Nostalgia: MTR by Elizabeth Briel Image: "Gilt Nostalgia", embossed handmade paper with pure copper leaf, bamboo scaffolding with construction mesh, LEDs, vintage sudare blinds, 2024

Each blind embossed print the physical record of a meeting between architecture and the artist’s body.

This installation marks a continuing preoccupation with life patterns in two cities: Paris and Hong Kong. These grooves and tiles mark the consciousness of residents in varied ways: our feet, neighborhoods, and identities.

Having been designed for a previous century, they provoke a sense of nostalgia or decay in those of us who live and work among them, a subtext to our lives. Though often ignored, they become an indelible part of our memories.
