I love painting on large formats because it allows me to let the energy flow and transfer it onto the canvas using my whole body. Painting on the raw jute was something new; it is significantly coarser and more textured than linen, which means the brushstroke and the paint behavior are completely different.
The result of this process is a tremendous, colorful explosion of life that is reminiscent of a wild summer garden. It is pure gestural abstraction – raw, dynamic, and completely uninhibited. I love how the raw jute tames the chaos and gives the bright green and red tones an earthy base from which they can break forth. Cheerful, fast, and alive.
The jute is heavy and coarsely woven, making it slightly translucent when free-standing. However, this is no longer the case when the work is hanging on the wall.
