"Mona" is Anastasia Mastilovic’s surreal reimagining of the iconic "Mona Lisa" — an intuitive, emotionally charged portrait born from abstraction. The painting began with fluid ink gestures, later layered with acrylic, revealing the ghostly suggestion of a human skull emerging through a dreamlike waterscape. Faced with a choice between leaving the skull or shaping a face, Mastilovic followed instinct, allowing Mona’s presence to surface from the depths.
Her face appears like a memory—soft, mysterious, and half-submerged in a dark, aquatic landscape. Abstract fish drift through the composition, adding movement and symbolism. Vivid cobalt blues and fiery oranges pulse through textured layers, creating a sense of illusion and revelation.
Mona explores the shifting nature of perception, the mystery of femininity, and the hidden forces that shape identity and time. It’s a piece for collectors drawn to surreal portraiture, intuitive process, and bold abstract expressionism.
Artwork is matted, framed with museum glass, hanging system attached.
