“The Art of Hope”, was inspired by the poem “Hope is the thing with the feathers” by American poet Emily Dickinson. In her poem, Dickinson says, “Hope is the thing with the feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all.” As one can see, Dickinson uses an extended metaphor to show how hope is like a bird inside the human soul who sings, no matter what the circumstance. This poem emphasizes how every single person has the power within them to withstand anything by singing. This piece, constructed using powdered glass, beautifully depicts the movement of the pages within a book and shows numerous feathers moving within and around the book. The piece moves on its own. You don’t need words on the pages. Nor does it need a hand to move them. This is similar to how a bird does not need words to sing. Furthermore, this piece shows us how with hope alone, one is able to accomplish anything.
