Do Thread on Me: Jeff Richards Retrospective

"Here, take these. I don't know what to do with them."

With those words an artist friend thrust a large box of industrial sewing threads spools into my hands. Little did I know that that simple action in a moment in time would alter my life dramatically.

I had been an installation artist, creating large room sized constructions like theatre sets that the viewer would enter and interact with. Eerie, shadowy psychological fun houses. Then a box of sewing thread spools enters my life and a transformation begins. Slow at first, like the crawl of tectonic plates. Then gathering momentum over time... a stroll, a brisk walk, a jog, a sprint. Suddenly, sewing thread is my primary medium for artistic expression. That was 25 years ago. To this day it has not grown stale.

I began my exploration of the world of creative art in my mid-thirties, taking seven years to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art at San Francisco State University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture at the San Francisco Art Institute. I then spent the next seven years forgetting everything I learned in art school. That's when the real work began, and soon after sewing thread entered my life. Apparently, it was all necessary.

"Ten, tómalos. No sé qué hacer con todo esto"

Con esas palabras un amigo artista puso en mis manos una caja grande de ovillos de hilo de coser industrial. No tenía ni idea de que esa acción simple en un momento dado cambiaría mi vida dramáticamente.

He sido artista de instalación, he creado construcciones grandes del tamaño de una habitación como sets de teatro en los que el espectador podía ingresar e interactuar con la instalación. Casas de diversión psicológica, misteriosas y sombrías. Entonces, unos ovillos de hilo de coser entran en mi vida y comienza la transformación. Lento al principio, como el gateo de las placas tectónicas. Luego, ganando impulso con el tiempo... un paseo, una caminata rápida, un trote, una carrera a toda velocidad. De repente, el hilo de coser es mi principal medio de expresión artística. Esto fue hace 25 años. Hasta el día de hoy no se ha vencido.

Comencé mi exploración del mundo del arte creativo a mediados de los treinta, tardé siete años en obtener una licenciatura en arte de estudio en la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco y una maestría en bellas artes en escultura en el Instituto de Arte de San Francisco. Luego pasé los siguientes siete años olvidando todo lo que aprendí en la escuela de arte. Fue entonces cuando comenzó el verdadero trabajo, y poco después el hilo de coser entró en mi vida. Al parecer, todo era necesario.
