Ron Williams
Ron started taking photographs in the early 1970’s as a hobby. When he and his family traveled to Africa in 1996, it was an opportunity to further immerse himself in his growing interest in photography. During that trip he spent 12 days in the Serengeti region exploring this diverse ecosystem and its people. Ron explains, “We traveled to remote areas and I didn’t see another soul who looked like me. It was wonderful to experience the people and the culture there.” Ron notes that Masai people who he encountered along the way were very friendly, but not all that interested to have their photos taken.
The animals were also intriguing subject matter. Ron attributes his wife Cille with being his photo scout and making him aware of wildlife that she was seeing along their journey. Much of their time was spent in the safety of a Land Rover vehicle. The animals stayed a safe distance, but were still close enough for Ron to find many compelling photographic moments.
Some animals were more elusive and not so cooperative. He shares a story of attempting to take photos of crocodiles as they were sunbathing {at a distance} on the Mara River. “My guide and I quietly crawled on our stomachs through the grass to a safe area with a view of the river. I turned off my flash so that I wouldn’t make noise and took my first shot. The crocs heard the tiny click of my camera and immediately went under water.” At least he captured a good photo on his first shot.
