A visitor to Wolfenbuttel, Germany in 1590 observed this: There were so many stakes to burn the witches that the place of execution resembled a small forest. An executioner of the wholesale witch burnings of Neisse in Silesia invented an oven where in a year he roasted to death 42 women and young girls. Within nine years, he had roasted over 1,000, including children two to four years old.
