As recent as 30 years ago, Catholic manuals claimed the Inquisition was a purely civil tribunal. Under this system, violence could be brought about by nothing more than normal living, and simply being born brought on the doctrine of original sin. Not only sexual impulses, which were always looked upon as corrupt, but just about every other natural impulse was held as evidence of anti-Christian perversity.
