More than fifty documents discovered in 1945 at Nag Hammadi in Egypt are a collection of early Gnostic Christian texts, and the originals of some are acknowledged to date from around the same time as the canonical Gospels. It was as if these texts contained a great secret, which was potentially dangerous to the emerging Establishment. Many of the Gnostic Gospels found at Nag Hammadi proclaim the preeminence of Mary Magdalene. One is even called the Gospel of Mary.
