A Contemplation on Peace by Austin, TX artist Kemba Opio was completed on June 23, 2023. It is located to the west of the parking lot at Carpenter Recreation Center. This project is a “reimagining” of the original Peace Wall sculpture created by the community in 2003 to commemorate September 11th. The original piece was decommissioned in 2022 due to significant damage to the tiles from weathering.
Opio’s new piece consists of two 28-foot-long metal panels with cut out designs that reveal a brightly colored mural underneath. The artist collaborated with the Thornton community by surveying residents with the question “What does peace mean to you?” Community responses were translated into the main languages spoken by Thornton residents, and were integrated in the artwork design. The visually striking life size figures incorporated into the art are a representation of the viewer and continues to ask the question, “What Does Peace Mean to You?” for the public walking by.
