Steven Kline has created a work of art that is both functional and visually exciting. The artist has welded lengths of industrial steel pipe into a "serpent" with boldly striped colors. This playground sculpture is made for touching, climbing, and sitting. With its circular design, it suggests a safe enclosure for play and gathering.
Kline's sculpture is the centerpiece of one of the urban "playspots" maintained by the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD). The site, at the Jefferson Davis Parkway and Cleveland Street neutral ground, has made this one of the most visible contemporary public art pieces in the city.
