Arts New Orleans, through the Percent For Art Program, commissioned Larry Daniel Nevil to create site-specific artworks for the Lower Coast of Algiers Community Center, in an area locally known as “Cut-Off.”
Larry Nevil, a native of the area, has created a series of four large paintings that capture the mood of Cut-Off, reflecting the past, present and future of the community. Nevil uses a wide variety of imagery collected over his lifetime, including portraits of family members, spiritual symbols like the ringing church bell, local landmarks, as well as sports and music, all intertwined to make-up a larger portrait of the area.
