BC Helix is an array of custom-made programmable light fixtures. Designed to hang from the branches of a historic oak tree in Lafayette Park, the installation enhances the tree’s natural beauty and showcases the power of the wind as it blows through its branches. The audience can interact with the piece by standing in front of a z-depth camera that feeds into visuals being composited live by the artist. Because the z-depth camera doesn’t depend on light to function, crisp silhouettes of the audience can smoothly be added using luma-key techniques. Geometric designs are stencil painted on to the polycarbonate skin of the helix fixtures to absorb light and cast shadows emanating from the tubular light fixture containing 72 LEDs each. Mirrored aluminum composite panels also make up a third of the helix skin and shimmer with light from the surrounding fixtures as they spin.
