John Kleinschmidt seeks to uncover hidden stories in strange sites and give measure to landscapes through a collaborative practice focused on interactive installations and printmaking. He has transposed a Louisiana swamp to an art gallery’s floor, filled a train station with a symphony of water sounds, and worked with young students to envision radical new “impossible birds” adapted to a flooded future.
As an architect, his professional work with Waggonner & Ball is focused on designing buildings and environments for places facing the effects of climate change. Through this work, he has become fascinated by the traces of old lines in our city: the Gentilly Ridge, the Pine Island Trend, and long-lost canals from previous epochs that explain our present reality and offer a clue to our possible future.
