Watercolor depicting the White Mountains in morning dew. Artwork framed in 1909 by Mackenzie & Company, Toronto.
Marmaduke Matthews was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway to paint scenes of the Rocky Mountains and Canadian countryside to boost tourism. Supposedly, Matthews would sit on the cow pusher of the train as he worked on his preparatory sketches. This scene, however, depicts the White Mountains of New Hampshire, suggesting he made a trip on the Grand Trunk railway.
