1/6 plate ruby ambrotype likely depicting Alva (1808-1879) and Charlotte Fowler (1809-1857) of Ulysses, New York. Samantha Fowler Ganoung (1834-1916) of West Hill, Ithaca, New York, likely hired H.B. Newton of Groton, New York through a local agent to create a duplicate ambrotype of her parents. The photo might date between Samantha's marriage to Jarvis Ganoung (1831-1898) in 1855 and her mother Charlotte’s death in 1857; however, if the Holmes, Booth & Haydens #26 mat is original to the photograph, then the ambrotype dates between 1861-1864.

Alva Fowler worked as a boat builder. After the death of his wife, Charlotte, he married Frances Wilcox (1826-1901).
