My inspiration for this composition was the imposing silhouette made by the Corbar Cross against the skyline. The Corbar Cross is a famous Buxton landmark, the original one being gifted to the Roman Catholic Church by the Duke of Devonshire in 1950. It was replaced in the 1980’s and the current one, which is smaller than the original, was erected in 2011. May 2019 was my first visit to Corbar Hill. The sheep wandered freely, taking little notice of me painting and sketching. I made a few sketches and studies plus took several photographs from the top of the hill. ‘Corbar Cross’ is one of a pair, the other painting depicting a landscape of grazing sheep and a distant farmhouse. This particular painting was sketched on site and completed in the studio. It was exhibited in Buxton 2019.
