Teapot, 8 x 7 x 5.5 inches. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Ford & Riley. The teapot has the same center design on both sides and the border on the rim of the lid is repeated on both handles (lid and teapot itself). The three cartouches (oval, rectangular and round) contain three different infills. The round cartouche shows two sailboats, while the rectangular cartouche portrays a man fishing in a river opposite a cliff with a castle on top. In the distance a man is crossing a bridge with one arch. Tall trees loom in the distance. The oval cartouche is infilled with small flowers and leaves. Behind the cartouches are flowering branches and ferns.

Whittingham, Ford & Co. began at the High Street Potteries of Burslem, Staffordshire, England, and operated from 1868 to 1873. In 1876, the company moved to its eventual permanent home at Newcastle Street, Burslem, operating under the name Whittingham, Ford & Riley. From 1882 to 1893, the growing company took the name Ford & Riley, then Ford & Sons from 1893 to 1908, with the Ltd. designation added in 1908, and continuing until 1938.
