Plate, 5 inches diameter. Black transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed maker's mark for Thomas Hughes. The "Sitka" pattern features a central cartouches are overlaid on a spray of flowers. The round cartouche with the enclosed sailboat is scalloped around the outside. The other cartouches are filled with floral or geometric elements. The boarder consists of floral elements alternating with round and square cartouches, and geometric patterns. The square cartouches contain an image of a sailboat in the water.

In 1820 Thomas Hughes established the Waterloo Road Works. These works were carried on by him and then his successors Stephen Hughes & Co. until about 1856. From c. 1855 to 1881 Thomas Hughes (grandson of the original potter) continued in the works. He enlarged, improved and modernized the works. In 1881 Hughes moved to the Top Bridge Works. In 1883/84 Mellor, Taylor & Co. took over the Top Bridge Works. Thomas Hughes (& Son) moved to the Unicorn Pottery.
