Platter, 15.25 x 12.25 inches. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Cumberlidge & Humphreys. This pattern features two curved hazelnut branches laden with nuts and leaves on the left and right with a small hazelnut sprig above and a butterfly in flight below.
The original partners were William Myatt Cumberlidge and Joseph Humphreys, who operated at the Well Street Pottery, Tunstall c. 1884-1885. In 1886 they moved to the Gordon Pottery, Tunstall. In 1889 they took on George Frederick Helé as partner and traded at the Gordon Works under the name Cumberlidge, Humphreys & Helé until 1892. At the end of 1892 Helé left the business, which returned to Cumberlidge & Humphreys. John Humphreys Jr. joined the business and in October 1893 Cumberlidge left. The business continued as Humphreys Brothers until 1896.
